The pharmaceutical waste rule for healthcare and drug facilities won’t be finalized in October after all.
The rule sounds simple enough: Workers can no longer flush old or unused pills down sinks or toilets, and instead must bag all of it.
Reason: 6,400 tons of drug waste overwhelms wastewater plants and reaches waterways every year.
But other changes, like a new generator numbering system and drug-specific guidelines, will mean a lot of work and re-training for impacted sites.
